CHERUB
THE CHICK
Week
19
A
sweet little Vernon Crane fable on nice scratchy vinyl. This is
one of several Crane stories offered by Kiddie Records weekly,
(see weeks 11 and 28 of 2006 for a couple of others). I
particularly like the artwork on the covers of these Columbia
offerings. They sport wonderful cartoon line drawings in simple
black line over a gradient single color background. The artwork
may be taken from the storybook, but that is unclear as I have
never seen the storybooks. Whatever the case may be, the
illustrations are simple and charming as are the stories
presented. The ones I have heard seem to offer little moral tales
told in a slow, soothing almost plodding pace. They are usually
slightly British sounding and so "veddy, veddy" polite.
This story started out with what I assumed would be the moral, be
yourself, conform, don't try to be different or move from you
station in life. But then, right at the end, there is a subtle
twist that actually made the piece work for me. Cherub had tried
other things which had educated and enlightened him and this made
him a better bird than he could have ever hoped for. Now, isn't
that tweet?
